Building a Strong Team: Mentorship Techniques for Development Services Managers

As a municipal Development Services Manager, your role is vital in ensuring the efficient operation of various processes. One crucial aspect of your responsibility is effectively mentoring, coaching, and teaching your reviewers and technicians. By fostering a positive and encouraging work environment, you can boost productivity and create a culture of growth and professionalism within your team. Delegation, workflow management, and active development and encouragement of your team, cultivate a positive team atmosphere in your department.

Delegation

Delegation is the key to optimizing efficiency and productivity within your team. It involves assigning tasks and responsibilities to the right individuals based on their skills and expertise. It can also mean challenging people with tasks that stretch them beyond their abilities.

  • Identify Strengths: Get to know your team members’ strengths and weaknesses. Assign tasks that align with their abilities to boost their confidence and motivation.
  • Clear Instructions: Provide clear and concise instructions for each assigned task. Make sure your engineers and technicians understand what is expected of them.
  • Monitor Progress: Regularly check in with your subordinates to monitor their progress. Offer support and guidance if they encounter challenges. Be open to their feedback.

Workflow Management

Efficient workflow management is crucial in ensuring tasks are completed on time and with quality.

  • Establish Priorities: Help your team prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance. Create a shared task list to keep everyone on the same page.
  • Streamline Processes: Identify any bottlenecks or unnecessary steps in your department’s workflow and work towards streamlining processes.
  • Encourage Communication: Foster open communication among team members to enhance collaboration and facilitate problem-solving.

Professional Development

A manager’s role goes beyond task assignment. It is essential to invest in the professional development of your engineer reviewers and technicians.

  • Training Opportunities: Offer relevant training programs and workshops to enhance their technical skills and knowledge.
  • Constructive Feedback: Provide constructive feedback regularly, focusing on both strengths and areas for improvement. Encourage a growth mindset and support continuous learning.
  • Recognition and Rewards: Acknowledge the efforts and achievements of your team members. Recognize their hard work and dedication to boost morale and motivation.

Positive Work Culture

A positive work culture can significantly impact employee satisfaction and productivity. To foster a “can-do” culture within your team:

  • Lead by Example: Demonstrate a positive and proactive attitude in your own work. Show enthusiasm and dedication to inspire your team. Be ready and willing to assist your team in accomplishing difficult assignments.
  • Celebrate Success: Celebrate individual and team achievements, no matter how big or small. Acknowledge the hard work and dedication of your engineer reviewers and technicians.
  • Encourage Collaboration: Promote a collaborative environment where team members support and learn from one another. This is challenging in a remote or hybrid environment, but can be done if addressed intentionally.

As a Development Services Manager, your leadership has a direct impact upon the shaping of thriving communities and business. By mastering delegation, managing workflow, developing and encouraging your people and fostering a positive work culture, you can build a strong and effective team. Remember that investing in your team’s growth and well-being will ultimately lead to increased productivity and a more efficient permitting process. Together, you can achieve great results and make a positive impact on your community and its growth.
